Welcome to the Historic Sweetest Heart of Mary Catholic Church web site

When Polish immigrants came to America back in the late 1800s and early 1900s, they found comfort and community in their churches.Sweetest Heart of Mary Church was a cornerstone of the Polish community in Detroit. It remains a source of pride and a beacon of faith for Polish Americans in the metro Detroit area to this day.

With a long tradition of celebrating Polish customs, Hearts, as it is affectionately referred to, still connects its parishioners with the homeland of their ancestors. Our parish is an active one and we invite you to join us for Mass or for any of the many events thru out the year that honor our Polish roots.

Events

Holidays are still celebrated in a big way at Sweetest Heart of Mary. If you've never participated in a Christmas Eve Midnight Mass, "Pasterka" or Shepherds Mass, you're missing out on a big Polish tradition. The traditional Carols (Koledy) are sung in Polish (with English translations) and the infamous bells named St. Joseph, St. Mary, & St. Barbara ring out in the night. The Church is decorated lavishly and the experience is a very moving one. Christmas Eve is also very special at Sweetest Heart of Mary because the very first Mass was said in this church in 1893 on Christmas Eve. So every year is a sort of an anniversary celebration of that special time in the lives of our Polish ancestors in Detroit.
Likewise, Easter is celebrated with great ceremony at Sweetest Heart of Mary. Actors dressed in traditional Polish celebration-type costumes fill the church with pageantry and color. Come experience the wonder of Sweetest Heart of Mary Church... and what better time than a holiday! Pictured below is the Palm Sunday procession. (Holiday photography by Christine Hubbard)

Sweetest Heart of Mary's big summer event is the annual Pierogi Festival. Held every August on the parish grounds, the 2-day event features Polish dancers, live Polka bands, terrific Polish food, and games of chance. (Pierogi Festival photography by Tony Ziebron)
