Welcome to the Historic Sweetest Heart of Mary Catholic Church web site

When Polish immigrants came to America back in the late 1800s and early 1900s, they found comfort and community in their churches.Sweetest Heart of Mary Church was a cornerstone of the Polish community in Detroit. It remains a source of pride and a beacon of faith for Polish Americans in the metro Detroit area to this day.

With a long tradition of celebrating Polish customs, Hearts, as it is affectionately referred to, still connects its parishioners with the homeland of their ancestors. Our parish is an active one and we invite you to join us for Mass or for any of the many events thru out the year that honor our Polish roots.

Pierogi Fest 2011 Was A Hit!

Another successful Pierogi Festival is behind us and we are all grateful for decent weather. Thank you, Lord, for seeing to it that it didn't keep attendees away. Our volunteers went above and beyond their own comfort to see to it that we all had a great time. Bravo to them! This festival of ours just keeps getting bigger and better every year.

I only snapped a few pictures this year but Tony Ziebron was kind enough to photograph the event. Those pictures will be uploaded to the parish's Flickr account where you can view them.

I tasted all three varieties of pierogi and they were just as good as ever! Thanks to all the Pierogi-ites for making such delicious food for us. I wish I could have tasted one of those terrific chicken dinners I remember from past festivals but I got there too late and they were all sold out.

I was delighted to meet Fr. Darrell Roman, our cluster's new Administrator. I heard such nice things about him from everyone I spoke to. It was a pleasure to finally meet him.

I had a wonderful time at the 2011 Pierogi Fest and I'm already looking forward to next year's festival! I hope to see you there!

Sweetest Heart of Mary Parish would like to welcome Fr. Darrell Roman as our new Pastor. Fr. Roman comes to us from St. Joseph Catholic Church in Lake Orion, Michigan. He was theologically trained and ordained in Poland but was born in Detroit and grew up in Livonia. His assignment with the parish begins July 1st.

Best wishes to Fr. Paul Czarnota who is moving on to a new assignment.

Pastor's Column, March 5-6, 2011, Fr. Paul Czarnota

FR. KROL TO HEAD NEW FOUNDATION
As many people heard from the ambo last weekend, our Fr. Miroslaw Krol has been asked to head up a foundation for the canonization of Pope John Paul II, soon to be Blessed John Paul II on Mercy Sunday this year. This great honor will result, however, in Fr. Krol leaving his post as vice rector of SS. Cyril and Methodius Seminary at Orchard Lake and, of necessity, leaving us.

Fr. Krol's last weekend at the cluster will be the weekend of May 14-15. He will have the Masses at Sweetest Heart of Mary Church. A reception will follow in the parish hall so that everyone will have a chance to say good-bye and thank you for his five years of service to our cluster.

YOU MAY HAVE HEARD THAT I ALSO AM LEAVING
This is correct. Our cluster of churches was published by the archdiocese as open and available for a new pastor. This change of pastors will occur at July 1st.

I came to this cluster tired. I now find myself exhausted. The pace is only going to pick up in the coming year.

It will benefit me health-wise to move to a single parish assignment. It will benefit the cluster to have a pastor who can advocate as strongly as possible for each parish in our cluster, as this year will be a redetermination for viability.

Let us all pray now that a suitable new pastor can be identified, and enjoy our time of prayer and fellowship while we are still together.

Stations of the Cross

Come and join us for this deeply moving devotion as we pray Mary's Way of the Cross. Distribution of Holy communion at the end of the devotion.

Every Friday during Lent at 6:30pm
